Hope Facilitators lead Domestic Violence Seminars

October 2010: Aracely and Manuel, two of our facilitators were recently trained by the Center of Violence Prevention in leading seminars to educate the general public about domestic violence. The seminars were free to the public, and held in the local schools. Some of the topics discussed included sexual abuse, racism, gender stereotypes, and physical violence. The materials used were written exclusively for use in Nicaragua and dealt with themes common here such as the machismo culture, the prevelance and general acceptance of alcholism and prostitution, as well as the reality of addictions to sniffing glue.

These seminars were initiated due to growing concerns voiced by the local schools in regards to violence in the schools, homes, and communities. The Ministry of Education, along with Hope and Development, is working to provide training to a total of 760 parents in 38 different schools.
