July 2010: Thanks to the efforts of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Baden along with the help of Beaver Rotary Club of Pittsburgh and Brother’s Brother we were able to pass along 150 sports uniforms to students in the Villa El Carmen area. Schools that received the uniforms were determined based on those which already had organized sports teams and a desire to see continued expansion of their programs. Students enthusiastically tried on their new jerseys and were thrilled that the new uniforms even included socks and soccer shin-guards. Pick-up games of soccer were immediately begun as they could not wait to try out the new look. The uniforms donated included basketball, soccer, and cheerleading uniforms and will certainly be put to use for that and more. The recipients are eager to have opportunities at which to wear their new uniforms, such as our upcoming volleyball tournament. There are even plans of using the girls’ cheerleading uniforms in the local Independence Day celebrations on September 14 and 15.
I’m reminded of a fun song by Paolo Nutini entitled New Shoes. The thrill of new shoes (or in our case new socks) brightens even the cloudiest day and brings joy to the wearer. The chorus says it all. Hey, I put some new shoes on, and suddenly everything is right, I said, hey, I put some new shoes on and everybody's smiling, it’s so inviting,
Oh, short on money,
but long on time,
slowly strolling in the sweet sunshine,
and i'm running late,
and i don't need an excuse,
'cause i'm wearing my brand new shoes
Thanks to all who donated!
