English Teachers Participate in Workshop Aimed at Reading in the Classroom

October 2010: We recently completed our second teacher training workshop. On the last Friday of every month the Ministry of Education meets with all of the teachers in the area to provide continued support and directon. These meetings last all morning and can get to be rather tiresome. Beginning in September, Hope and Development invited the English teachers to stay after for lunch and some additional training time. Despite the long morning of meetings the teachers were excited to do so, and have since asked that the training continues.

This month we focused on reading in the classroom. Teachers were given four different ways in which they might use a read-aloud in their classroom and were shown how it could be done. After watching the demonstration they were given a book and asked to practice one of the methods they had just seen. Based on the book selection teachers chose to sing, ask questions, have students repeat sections, and think aloud about what they were reading. At the completion of our time together teachers had seen and practiced many different ways of using books in their classrooms. They now have a small collection of 11 English books to share. If you’re interested in donating more books for the teachers to use please contact us!
