February 2011: Thanks in large part to the Connollys for their generous donation of school supplies, Hope and Development has distributed 32 new backpacks filled with school supplies to area students. H&D teachers were thrilled to have the opportunity to assist those families who struggle to afford school costs. While public education is compulsory in Nicaragua, families are expected to purchase the necessary supplies and school uniforms. Children are not allowed to attend school until they have the met those basic requirements. For some, it comes down to a choice between education and food. By providing these needy families with backpacks and school supplies they no longer have to make that difficult choice.
