June 2011: Elvis Gutierrez has been working with Hope & Development as an English teacher since 2006. In addition to teaching English with us, Elvis has worked for the local public school system as a high school English teacher beginning in 1991. Elvis grew up as the oldest of 10 boys and was raised mostly by his grandmother while his parents worked away from home. Elvis recalls “When I finished 6th grade, I had to go to the secondary school, but in another community- maybe about 7 or 8 km from home. I had to get up at 4:30 am and I was back home at 2 or 3 in the afternoon.” Starting young, Elvis had an internal drive to improve his life, often working two jobs while attending classes. Now Elvis works to give students opportunities he never had. Elvis is now in his final year at University in Managua, studying English. He has a wife and three sons, and after living in Villa El Carmen for over 30 years, he is devoted to improving education for his children and those of the community.
Among the other H&D teachers, Elvis is known to be both a hard worker and a hilarious team member, always willing to crack a joke about himself. Elvis has never travelled abroad, yet he has a deep understanding of the global aspect of our world and passion for learning more. Elvis’ students would describe him as both serious and funny - a teacher who is highly regarded by students, parents, and co-workers - and a blessing to The Hope and Development Foundation.
